When the structure no longer fits

Organisations often grow by adding people and roles one at a time. After a while, nobody is quite sure who decides what, some teams are overloaded while others are not, and new strategies stall because the structure was never set up to deliver them.

What we do

  • Review your current structure, roles, workloads and reporting lines.
  • Design options for a new structure linked to your strategy and budget.
  • Write or update job descriptions and grading.
  • Plan the move to the new structure, including staffing changes.
  • Help with communication to staff so the change is understood.

Linking structure to people

Once the new structure is agreed, our Recruitment / Workforce team can help fill new roles, and our Training team can help staff move into them.

Who it's for

  • Growing businesses, NGOs scaling up programmes, financial institutions opening branches, and public bodies reorganising their teams.

What you receive

  • A review of your current structure, roles, workloads and reporting lines
  • Two or three structure options, linked to your strategy and budget
  • Updated job descriptions and a simple grading approach
  • A transition plan covering staffing changes and timing
  • Help with communicating the change to staff
  • Recruitment and training support for new or changed roles

Getting the structure right, within the law

Changing roles and reporting lines affects people’s jobs, so it needs to be handled fairly and in line with employment law. In Sierra Leone that means taking account of the Employment Act 2023, existing contracts and any collective agreements, and consulting staff properly. We plan the transition with you so changes are explained, documented and carried out in the right order.

We also make sure the new structure can be paid for and staffed. Our accountants can check the cost against your budget, our recruitment team can help fill new roles, and our trainers can help people step into them.

Frequently asked questions

How do we know if our structure needs changing?

Common signs are unclear decision-making, some teams overloaded while others are not, managers with too many direct reports, and new strategies that stall. A short review tells you whether the structure is the problem.

Will a restructure mean redundancies?

Not necessarily. Many restructures move roles and reporting lines without reducing staff. Where jobs are affected, we help you plan a fair process in line with employment law.

Can you write job descriptions?

Yes. We write or update job descriptions for the new structure and can suggest a simple grading approach so roles are paid consistently.

Do you work with NGOs scaling up programmes?

Yes. We help NGOs design structures that fit new programmes and funding, and that funders will recognise.

How long does it take?

A review and options can usually be completed in a few weeks for a small or medium-sized organisation. The transition depends on how much is changing.
